UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Dialogue
The Chair of History and Theory of Culture existed from 1985 to 2005. In April of 2006, the institutional structure of the Faculty was redefined and the Institute of Cultural Studies was established, comprising the former Chairs of History and Theory of Culture, Ethnology and Folklore Studies. The Chair of Intercultural Dialogue is part of the same Faculty but as distinct structural unit.
During two years, the preparation work was undertaken for the founding of the Chair. On the 23rd March 2006, the Director-General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura signed the agreement for the establishment of the UNESCO Chair of Intercultural Dialogue with Ivane Javakhishvili of Tbilisi State University. On the 4th April, the Rector of the Tbilisi State University, Prof. Rusudal Lortkipanidze, as a counterpart, confirmed the agreement with his corresponding signature. In addition, the Chair is now a member of the UNITWIN/UNESCO network.
The Chair of Intercultural Dialogue cooperates with organizations that represent ethnic and religious minorities residing in Georgia, NGOs (International Fund of Protection of the Rights and Religious-cultural Heritage of Kurds; Association Studio-RE), the Government of Abkhazia, the Department of Information Policy and others. |
