UNESCO Chair in Comparative Studies of Religions and Interfaith Dialogue
The UNESCO Chair in Comparative Studies of Religions and Interfaith Dialogue was founded in September 2002 at Saint-Joseph University. It was initially conceived under the title UNESCO “Chair in Comparative Studies of Religions” and the words “and Interfaith Dialogue” were added to the former title in order to adhere to the UNITWIN/UNESCO network which has the inter-religious dialogue as one of the objects. The UNESCO Chair, which enjoys the statute of a Chair of the USJ, is directly attached to the Rectorat, while maintaining an academic relationship to the Faculty of Religious sciences. Prof. Louis Boisset is the present Chairholder. The aim of the Chair is the understanding of the monotheisms without excluding other traditions. The Chair wants to contribute to locate the USJ as a pole of interpretation of the religious facts in Lebanon and in the Mediterranean Middle East, in co-operation with other institutions of the USJ and partner universities, in France and in the Mediterranean area. For this reason, the Chair has as the ambition to participate at the level of doctoral formations and masters using seminars and conferences. Furthermore, it attempts to innovate through initiatives in favour of inter-religious dialogue.
